Les Cottages du Tarn: An Eco-Responsible Stay in the Heart of Occitanie’s Biodiversity
What if your next holiday in the South of France was also an invitation to reconnect with nature? Nestled between Albi and Toulouse, in the heart of the Gaillac vineyard, Les Cottages du Tarn offer far more than a peaceful setting and thoughtfully equipped accommodation. Since the very beginning, Martial and Cathy have chosen a form of tourism rooted in environmental respect, local biodiversity, and responsible resource management. A genuine commitment, reflected every day through concrete, visible actions — starting from the moment you arrive.
In this article, we invite you to discover the behind-the-scenes of this eco-responsible approach, and everything the nature of the Tarn has to offer during a weekend getaway or a week-long holiday.
🌿 The Biodiversity Maze: Learning Through Play, Surrounded by Nature
At our Peyrole site, we have created something truly original: the Biodiversity Maze. Picture a stretch of tall grasses and wildflowers left deliberately in their natural state, crossed by winding paths and dotted with fun quiz panels (QCM). A genuine discovery trail for visitors of all ages!
The concept is simple: as you wander through the maze, you answer questions about biodiversity, local plants, insects, and sustainable farming practices. Each correct answer brings you one step closer to finding a final mystery word. A playful, engaging way to raise awareness about environmental issues — without ever losing the sense of fun and adventure.
What makes this maze even more special? It is freely accessible at no extra charge for all guests staying at Peyrole. No booking required, no additional fee: nature is right here, just steps from your cottage, waiting for you.
The tall grasses left unmown are not an oversight — they are a deliberate choice. These so-called “spontaneous vegetation zones” provide essential refuges for pollinators, small mammals and birds. By preserving these spaces, we actively contribute to maintaining an ecological corridor in the heart of the Tarn countryside.
👉 The Biodiversity Maze is accessible from all our Peyrole cottages: Bien-Être Jacuzzi, Loft, Gîte, Grand Cottage, Bohème and Safari.

🐑 Les Mimines: Eco-Grazing at the Heart of Peyrole
From the windows and terraces of all our Peyrole cottages, you will likely spot our Solognote sheep, affectionately nicknamed Les Mimines. These four-legged residents are not here by chance: they play an essential role in our eco-responsible approach.
Rather than using petrol-powered mowers, chemical weedkillers or polluting agricultural machinery to maintain our green spaces, we have chosen eco-grazing: an age-old practice that entrusts the natural upkeep of meadows to grazing animals. The sheep browse, gently tread the soil, and in doing so, help maintain the plant diversity of the meadows while naturally fertilising the land through their droppings.
Research confirms that grazing management plays a key role in supporting biodiversity, helping to maintain open habitats and prevent the dominance of a single plant species. A natural, silent and environmentally respectful alternative to conventional land maintenance.
For our guests, Les Mimines are often a delightful surprise: children adore them, adults find them wonderfully calming. Watching them graze from your terrace on a quiet morning, coffee in hand — that is one of those simple, precious joys that only the Tarn countryside can offer.
The Solognote breed, hardy and well-suited to open landscapes, is particularly valued for eco-grazing thanks to its resilience and adaptability. By choosing this breed, we also support the preservation of a heritage French sheep breed.

☀️ Solar Energy: Our Rooftops in Service of the Planet
Our commitment to the environment also extends to a serious reflection on energy consumption. Our buildings are equipped with photovoltaic solar panels installed on the rooftops, harnessing the abundant solar energy of our region to generate electricity and offset our energy needs.
Occitanie is one of the sunniest regions in France, with average sunshine levels among the highest in the country. This is an opportunity we have chosen to embrace fully. Thanks to these installations, we significantly reduce our dependence on the traditional electricity grid and lower our overall carbon footprint.
Across France, more and more accommodation providers are integrating renewable energy solutions as part of a broader commitment to sustainable tourism. We are proud to be part of this positive movement. Staying at Les Cottages du Tarn means choosing accommodation that takes its energy responsibilities seriously.
Our electric vehicle charging points, available at both Peyrole and Brens, follow the same logic: helping you travel more responsibly, without any compromise on comfort.
🌾 Preserved Nature: Between Vineyards and the Tarn Countryside
Beyond our own initiatives, the entire environment surrounding Les Cottages du Tarn breathes biodiversity. At Peyrole, you are immersed in open countryside, with no overlooking neighbours, surrounded by meadows, hedgerows and the rolling hills typical of the inner Tarn. Nights are silent, skies are star-filled, and local wildlife — songbirds, butterflies, pollinators — is ever-present.
At Brens, our second site sits within an equally remarkable landscape: the Gaillac AOC vineyard. One of the oldest wine appellations in France, Gaillac stretches across sun-drenched hillsides where vines grow alongside natural meadows and wooded areas. A living terroir, shaped by centuries of human craftsmanship and respect for the land.
At both sites, we have made a deliberate choice to preserve natural spaces rather than artificialise them. No closely cropped lawns, no rigid formal gardens: nature has its place here, and it shows with every passing season.
The Tarn is the first department in France to be certified for sustainable tourism — a recognition that reflects a genuine, territory-wide commitment to biodiversity and responsible travel. Staying here means contributing to that collective effort.

Choosing Les Cottages du Tarn means choosing accommodation that thinks beyond the stay. Beyond your holiday, of course — we hope you will leave feeling restored, happy and already looking forward to returning. Our commitments are not marketing arguments. They are life choices, carried by Martial and Cathy since the Cottages first opened in 2018, and strengthened with each passing year. The Biodiversity Maze, Les Mimines, the solar panels, the preserved natural spaces… together they form a coherent project, deeply rooted in the Tarn territory and in respect for what surrounds us.
The Tarn is proud to lead the way: it is the first French department to receive international sustainable tourism certification, and we are proud to be a concrete part of that story.
